IVI Foundation Releases Four New Instrument Classes

NIWOT, CO, March 03, 2010

The IVI Foundation today announced the release of four new instrument classes: digitizer, counter/timer, upconverter, and downconverter. Much of the new specification work is designed to enable building drivers for synthetic instrumentation. Interest from the U.S. Department of Defense, in particular, had initially sparked this effort within the IVI Foundation.

"The release of these new instrument classes signifies our ongoing commitment to continually broaden the array of instruments with common API definitions. These classes provide a common base programming model for synthetic instruments and establish a model for specialized instruments to follow so that drivers are more consistent and easier to use," said Joe Mueller, president of the IVI Foundation.

In addition to interchangeability, one of the most compelling benefits of IVI drivers is the capability to create a single driver that provides end users a first class experience in nearly all major IEW development environments including Visual Basic, C++, C#, MATLAB®, LabVIEW®, and Agilent VEE®.

The IVI Foundation also brings together some of the biggest names in the industry to ensure that IVI drivers continue to work well in the face of rapidly evolving software, such as new versions of LabVIEW, Visual Studio®, 64-bit operating systems, .NET, and Windows 7.

About the IVI Foundation
